Hair

From the creative world of Stan Kenton comes the music of Hair.

Hair. Hair. HAIR. I've seen dozens of "Hair" cover albums in my time, but none of them screamed "buy me" louder than this Stan Kenton release. The beautiful woman, the five pink cigarettes, the HAIR... how could I resist? There are some records that are worth the price just for the cover art and this is definitely one of them.

But Jazz man Stan Kenton and his huge ensamble do a pretty good job with the music anyway. This isn't a hip album by any means but Kenton is no Lawrence Welk either. I like his bouncy hyped-up tempos, his straight-laced singers, and the fact that he chooses a wide variety of Hair songs for his album instead of just the few hits that everyone else covers.

"Aquarius" and "Good Morning Starshine" are here, but Kenton chose a number of more obscure songs, equally good, to round out the album. These are great fun, so eBay yourself a copy and give 'em a listen. And don't trust anyone over 30.

Songs:

Aquarius (MP3) A great jazz version of this awesome tune!
Good Morning Starshine (MP3) I call this one "attack of the killer brass section".
I Got Life Has anyone seen my liver?
Hare Krishna (MP3) Peace. Flowers. Love. Happiness. It's so fine.

BILL BOY (will_boy1999@yahoo.com) says:
Actually this was Stan's last Capitol record release before he started his own label, Creative World. This was a pathetic last-ditch attempt by Capitol to keep Kenton on board. Kenton, being the genius he was, was just not one to sell his soul for a few extra record sales. And this album is a total sell-out. Aside from the sexy babe on the cover, this album SUCKS thru and thru. (04-04-2003)

Joseph Gallant (notquite@hotmail.com) says:
Assuming this album had been released in or by the beginning of 1969 (when the Fifth Dimension's single of "Aquarius" was released), I would take it that the "middle-of-the-road" radio stations of that era (like WNEW-AM in New York) would have played the Stan Kenton version of "Aquarius" while the top-40 stations (like WABC-AM in New York) would, of course, play the Fifth Dimension's hit single version. Country Paul says:
Stan Kenton was about as innovative and "outside" as a mainstream jazz big band could be. However, when you start with crap (as in the abysmal score and concept of this exploitative stage excercise), you still get crap - nicely wrapped, indeed, but there's still crap at the core. So don't open the package. (10-16-2001)

NTX says:
Actually, there IS a version of "Sodomy" on here. It's a (non-vocal) feature for Jack Sheldon. (10-11-2001)

Bob Sorrentino (bobsorrentino@gateway.net) says:
A long-time Kenton fan, I have this album and it's actually not so bad, certainly not as bad as the Glenn Miller Orchestra's "In the Mod," from around that same period. Now, if you wanna hear something REALLY freaky, put on Kenton's Christmas album, a 1962 release. I guarentee, you'll never hear your Christmas favorites quite the same way again! (05-09-2000)

SueBri says:
But does he got his ass?...doesn't seem too...maybe i'll listen again...right after I go throw up... (03-12-2000)

Not too many comments on this one huh? I just wish Stan the Msn had done "Sodomy"!!! (10-14-1999)
