We're The Banana Splits

Your childhood TV rock-n-roll idols, on vinyl!

One of the greatest things about the music of the 60's is how it accessible it was to just about anyone. The cool kids had the Beatles and the Stones; middle America watched the Monkees; the hippies had the Dead and Jefferson Airplane; even Mom and Dad could swing to a homogenized version of Lennon & McCartney done up by Enoch Light or Tony Bennett. And for the toddlers, there were these weirdos, the Banana Splits.

I was suprised at how good some of the songs on this hard to find LP are (thanks to my friend Gary who let me borrow his copy). I'm not saying the Banana Splits were the next Beatles, but compared to the kind of music they make for kids today (the Barney theme comes to mind) this stuff kicks ass. Let's hear it for Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork!

The Banana Splits was so cool when I was a kid... and then I saw it on Cartoon Network as an adult. WTF was I thinking?!?!?! The horror! Ah well, best part (besides the Tra La La song) was the cartoons they featured -- Arabian Knights, Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn, and wasn't there some pirate one? Heh... (To Frank of The Vinyl Museum -- great site. I'm linked to it from "The Most Wretched Music on" -- too bad nobody today cuts wretched music today quite like Mrs. Miller, Tammy Fay Bakker, & Mae West. Oh the humanity!!!) (09-21-2003)

Low-quality cartoons/films linked by folks in evil costumes running around like they were all stoned. Entertainment at it's low. I wouldn't let my kids watch it. And yes, I have no childhood experience myself as I've seen it first on Cartoon Network as an adult. (09-10-2003)

This is great. I thought I was one of the only people to remember this show from the 60's. I was in my teens back then but watched with my younger sisters and loved it. The Banana Splits show along with HR Puff N' Stuff are the most scary shows ever... In fact, I remember watching The Banana Splits show when I was like 10 years old at 2 oclock AM and I got bad vibes from it... It literally gave me goose bumps and I was afraid to walk from my living room down the hall to my bedroom. Being 17 years old now, looking at pictures of them online I still get goose bumps. Scary crap. Sure todays childrens shows are a little violent, but at least they arn't possesed by something so evil that you get chill bumps everytime you watch it. HR Puff N' Stuff is the same way, EXTRA SCARY CRAP! (08-23-2003)
