We're The Banana Splits

Your childhood TV rock-n-roll idols, on vinyl!

One of the greatest things about the music of the 60's is how it accessible it was to just about anyone. The cool kids had the Beatles and the Stones; middle America watched the Monkees; the hippies had the Dead and Jefferson Airplane; even Mom and Dad could swing to a homogenized version of Lennon & McCartney done up by Enoch Light or Tony Bennett. And for the toddlers, there were these weirdos, the Banana Splits.

I was suprised at how good some of the songs on this hard to find LP are (thanks to my friend Gary who let me borrow his copy). I'm not saying the Banana Splits were the next Beatles, but compared to the kind of music they make for kids today (the Barney theme comes to mind) this stuff kicks ass. Let's hear it for Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork!

Charlie ( says:
I have the same story. My buddy of 23 years and I were talking about the old shows and of course that led to the Bannana Splits and how Bob Marley (RIP) ripped off the Splits theme song.
Anyhow, it was my favorite show and I would love to get my hands on it for my kids.
Dora the Explorer and the Wonder Pets can't hold a Candle to Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork.
Tra la la, la la la la ...... (11-16-2006)

I remember a singing duo on the Banana Splits Show that were great. Even as a small child I enjoyed their singing. But I cannot remember their names..? They sang a particular song that I would like to get a copy of,, but cannot remember that either. As I recall, the singing duo were both men and dressed nicely and sang in harmony. Any ideas as to who they were? Thanks. Jeff (11-12-2006)

Chelsea M. Willard ( says:

Marty Hill ( says:
Thank you for bringing me back to who I was as a kid...I was so cool, because I was the first kid in the neighborhood to have the album....of course, I was also the ONLY kid that ever thought that the banana splits were in my record player and tried to TALK to them.
I am now 41, and I miss them. It seems like yesterday, I was waiting for the show to come on...I think that I would watch them still.
Here's to all of us that were cool kids.

Rob ( says:
Yeah, I remember the Splits. What I don't remember is Snork having eyes! Just shades, man. I've no doubt he was the forerunner of Timbuck 3 and maybe the Ramones. (He looks like a short Joey, anyway.)

Anyway, I watched them faithfully every Saturday morning and thoughtn they were great. For that matter, I watched them on Boomerang not too long ago and they seemed okay, which is more than can be said for the mini-feature "Danger Island" that ran on the show each week. I DID like the Three Muskateers (I was very disillusioned when I read an abridged version of Dumas' novel in the seventies) and the Arabian Knights.

I also remember the Terrible Twosome (I think that's right. Anyway it was a girl and a boy) the kid singers who would show up to assult the Splits with thier horrible singing. In fact, I not only watched the show, but I have (somewhere) a Banana Splits Coloring Book that my aunt bought for me. Clearly, I was a BIG fan. (10-29-2006)

Tony James Radio ( says:
Greetings From England
Great the Splits!
Totally agree, that the brilliant, pure pop songs of the Bananas should be given much more credit than they get.

Splits fans...

Was it Fleagle or Fleegle ?

I always thought that it was FLEAGLE
(as in, Fleagle the Beagle) but have recently seen Fleegle on some internet sites...

Who knows for definite ?

Paul Graf ( says:
I ran with the 'Splits back in the 60's. Man, those were crazy times. All I can tell you about those days is don't share your blow with Snorkie. I mean, just look at the dudes nose! Plus he was crazy! You remember, the ATV over the motorcycles thing? That was nothing. Ask me about the Mud Sharks at Frank Zappas' Hotel! Wow man! (10-15-2006)

Tim ( says:
I have had the Bob Marley song Buffalo Soldiers in my head is this just an early example of sampling since his refrain sounds a lot like the Fa-la-la song...Are they owed some royalties (10-14-2006)

paul ( says:
