Ethel Merman Disco Album

I've got rhythm... like no rhythm you've heard before.

Ethel Merman, 70's disco diva? It's true -- or at least, they gave it a shot with this surreal 1979 release on A&M records. With Cher and Streisand having blazed the trail, it was only a matter of time before Merman was called upon to belt out disco versions of her classic tunes.

Thank god disco died when it did... who knows how far it would have spread had it lasted?

Update: Saints preserve us the Ethel Merman Disco Album is now available on CD! Why scour thrift store record bins for the next six years when you can just click and buy online? It's just the thing for your next swinging dance party!

I thought Ethel really shined on this one. Does anyone around here know where i can score some cock? (04-27-2006)

I wana hear from anyone who can get me Ethel Merman on DVD singing her disco classics- I LOVE this! I have played it God knows how many times and never tire of hearing the Majestic Merm thrash out these songs. There will never be another be another performer like this who got involved in every genre going. The Ethel Merman Disco Album-who can ask for anything more! (04-14-2006)

Dave Spring says:
This album first made me laugh my head off -- then led to a great appreciation of what this great Diva of Diction did for musical theatre, and how well older performers can still entertain and inspire. I conduct musicals, and my nickname has been "the president of the Merman fan club." Not sure it's true, but lots of fun. Long live Ethel! (04-13-2006)

Royce Waukus says:
My uncle had an autographed copy of this album and a book, but when a collector offered to buy it, it turned out the autographs were forgeries. For some reason her autograph was especially valuable for a few years and people forged her autograph on everything. You should take your autographed album from the Salvation Army and have it verified to make sure it's authentic. Hope it is for your sake, but don't get your hopes up :-( (03-12-2006)

ScottR says:
I remember my gay cousin buying this album when it came out. He couldn't stop raving about it and even saw her in concert when she toured behind this bit of blecch. I was about 15 at the time and I remember thinking, this will be a final straw in the death of disco. I'm pretty sure I was right. (03-10-2006)

digitecno says:
what an original concept!!!!....for 1979. (03-07-2006)

Andy Mentzer ( says:
This album HAS to have Allen Carr involved at some level. The end of the Disco era? Did'nt "Can't Stop the Music" slither in about that time? Ohferfukssakes! THIS IS A CLASSIC !!
Good job frank! (02-19-2006)

Edward Lopez ( says:
I found a copy of this LP in a Salvation Army store for $1. It is in MINT condition and, best of all, it is autographed by Ethel! By itself it's worth approx. $10. Autographed, close to $100! Eat your hearts out! (12-16-2005)

Randy Jewell says:
Ethel Merman singing Disco? What a hoot. I laughed my ass off. I only wish I could get the whole disk. (11-28-2005)

boo says:
Compare this with William Shatner singing "Mr. Tambourine Man".

Or "Spock Sings".

Yeah, at least Ethel could sing. But it's still High Camp. (11-25-2005)

Craig Curtis ( says:
While I am still MAD about my EMDA, I must say, the new film to dvd transfer of CALL ME MADAME, and the special features, say it all about a woman who was a force unto herself. She never changed a note, a beat...never. She's the one and only. I bet her Episcopalian self served fishes and loaves to the masses, every Tuesday thru Sunday, with a Wednesday matinee, and a Saturday tossed in. Hear the Ethel Merman Disco Album, sit back, relax. Know that there is genius here. She gave her all, till the end. (11-06-2005)

K-roni says:
Well, Ogie Boogey can bite my ass! as a restaurant manager in the late 70's, I heard this album over and over. It was very popular with my gay waiters. I think Ethel sounds WONDERFUL. I am not gay nor male, but I sure am glad my staff shared this treasure with me! What a rip!

Shane Folger ( says:
Ethel's disco album is just great fun!! Every time I hear her singing on one of her recordings I just can't help but smile!! It's all such happy music. (08-25-2005)

Craig Curtis ( says:
I bought this album at the end of the disco era. I mean, this woman went on DANCE FEVER schilling the thing, for chrissake. I loaned it out, and as books and albums go, I never got it back. Years later, I found that in San Francisco, there was a waiting list about three miles long, and that the album would cost 40 bucks if they ever got a copy in. Then, in 1999, I dropped into a used record shop in Hollywood, asked the proprietor if, per chance, he had a copy of The Ethel Merman Disco Album, and by gosh, he went to the rack, pulled the album out, and guess what?! It was $6! Perfect shape, great liner notes, and I play it at parties....people cannot believe that she actually made the album at 70-odd! God love her for having the guts to make such a recording, staying up with the times, and really, it is a smashing success. She's the best, whatever era. That brassy voice is unique, and held up beautifully for five decades. I love La Merm... (08-25-2005)

Matt ( says:
I love Ethel Merman!! And her disco album rocks! They play it all the time at the gay clubs here in Phoenix.. We love you Ethel! *hugs (08-07-2005)

i was once woken up by my clock radio playing ethel's "hooray for hollywood" and i swear i started screaming in my sleep. (07-31-2005)

It is nice to see other Ethel admirers out there. The detractors can say what they want - obviously they have no idea who Ethel Merman IS. Perhaps their only recollection of Ethel is from 'Love Boat' or 'Batman' (what the heck was her villaness name? Lola Lasagna? Lotsa Lasagna? Something like that...) If they've never heard Ethel Merman & Mary Martin together, or Ethel singing one of the huge hits from her 40+ years on Broadway, then they don't knowthe real Ethel Merman. Ethel's 'plant both feet and sing' style, and a voice that you could hear in the second balcony (no microphones, either) and her unerring pitch and diction combined to make her the brightest Star on Broadway. God bless her for doing a disco album - what else could anyone do in the late 70's? You'll notice, even though this in NOT Ms. M's style, she is still PERFECTLY in pitch, and right on tempo. At 71 years old, how many other singers could say that? She's been called 'a force of nature' and Cole Porter said she sounded 'like a band going by.' Somehow, I don't ever think we'll see those appelations applied to Britney Spears or even Madonna. She was the perfect belter, at the perfect time - the Golden Age of musical theater. So there. Perhaps Ethel said it best. When asked if she was still speaking with a co-star in 'Gypsy' she said 'Of couse I speak to her. Every night when the curtain goes down I say 'Go F%@# yourself!' That would be my advice for the Ethel-bashers out there. (07-25-2005)

Mike ( says:
In response to the commennt's recently made
Ethel did a great job on this and worked hard to
make sure her part was done to,the best of her
abbilty as for being a fly by night try as for a google alert on her there is something everyday with her name. (06-30-2005)

ogie boogie says:
you people are so weird to worship a woman who had so very little impact on the disco era. she was a fly by night thing that didn't last long. only broadway fans could consider this trash disco the only good part about it is the backup singers and the music but she sucks!! (06-20-2005)
