Poe through the Glass Prism

Quoth the Raven, "Oh my God!"

Here's another one of those "concept albums" that people used to do back in the 70's before musicians realized that it was a bad bet to expect people to have any interest in actual artistry. This one has the bold idea of recording a series of rock tunes set to the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe. All in all, it's not a bad idea, and one that must have been largely lost on the dope-smoking rock-n-roll record buyers of the era.

The music on this album is really pretty cool. Check out "The Raven", which I understand hit the charts for at least a little while in 1974. Its wailing Hammond organ sounds and monotone vocal delivery are pretty catchy. I also enjoy the way the band combines early-Beatles haircuts with late-Beatles costuming. Who can possibly resist a band with a velvet jacket and a giant black bird? Not me!

I am a big fan of the 60's and 70's. I like to find those hard to find albums and check out the songs on the flip side. When I came across this site I noticed that the fans of this group seemed to have some special feeling about them. I listened to the Raven a few times and fell in love with the song, the arrangeent, the voice, everything. I went on line and found a few copies for sale and bought one. The thing I find most interesting is that the album is so unique. The group uses three lead singers and four part harmony in many songs. The songs written by Christiano are powerful and emotional while some of the songs written by Varano are somewhat jazz oriented though others are rockers. Don't get me wrong. This group rocks when it's supposed to and can be very melodic when the mood calls for it. Some might say that there are influences here such as Procol Harem, Venella Fudge, Steppenwolf, but I think the Glass Prism is an original. Sure every one takes what they hear and what can you do with a few chords and a few notes that hasn't been done before. However, for their time, I think they stand out. Of course the concept album was new, The Beatles, The Who, tried it. Using Poes lirics was new and has been done since but not as thoughtful as this album. Keep in mind this was 35 years ago. For those who are aware of these guys you know what I am talking about. For the new fans, get the album. Listen to the great follow up to the Raven , the Conquerer Worm, or the great harmonies in ElDorado and Dream Within A Dream, or the beautiful melody of Hymn. This is a great rock and roll band with much class. I envy those who got to see them live. It must have been a great show. (11-23-2004)

JUST LISTENED TO THE RAVEN FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE. (11-18-2004)

Dawn says:
I understand this album was actually recorded in 1969. I have searched but can not find any pop act, or rock act that had a Poe connection before that. I guess that means that anyone else that tried it latter may have copied The Glass Prisms idea. I have found others and I really like The Glass Prism songs the best. (11-14-2004)

Mad Dr. Matt (magob@aol.com) says:
Lou Reed did one of these a year or so ago. Every so often Poe gets dusted off and propped up in the corner for a while. And say - NEVERMORE! (11-11-2004)

Mary N says:
Always our favorite. Saw them so many times. Love to see them getting recognition. Hope they are well. Wonderful memories. (11-09-2004)

Glenn L says:
I can't believe it. The legend lives on. These guys were the best thing around in the late 60's and early 70's. I saw them when they were The El Caminoes and even when they were Shenandoah. The northeast had some great bands over the years but I have to say these guys were the innovators the grandfathers of them all. Other bands would come to see what these guys would try next. They truely led the way. Congratulations on a great career. (11-04-2004)

Grew up in PA when this group was hot. I found the album in a record store about 3 years ago in Portland OR. I was really surprised. It was in great condition. Does any one know anything about the guys in the Glass Prism? Are they still alive? Do they still play? I have often wondered. I get back home almost every year and I would love to see a reunion. Great memories. (10-27-2004)

Danny Bentle says:
Hey Fritz, what's the chance of getting your hands on the tape of the Glass Prism on Kommotion? I understand those shows were taped ahead of time. So they may have those tapes in a vault somewhere. Make the call. (10-26-2004)

FRITZ S. says:
In the late 1960's into the early 1970's, Channel 16 WNEP out of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA aired a high-school Dance Party T.V. Show called "KOMMOTION", hosted by Jay Christopher. The Glass Prism appeared several times on that show to promote their 2 great R.C.A. albums. (10-24-2004)

To Beth, Greg A , MaryAnn and all other fans who want a Reunion:
the only hope we have is to talk Louie Cossa into it. He doesn't think enough people will show up for a reunion to bother to practice for it.
Here is a new Email Address to reach him :
lou20021@yahoo.com .
Dont be afraid to use strong flattery to cox him into it! Please,to everyone interested, if he see enough names petitioning him , he may reconsider.
It is the only chance we have, there is very little talk about a reunion any more. Let him know that you will go.Take the time to email him and do it now, please dont put it off! (10-14-2004)
